We, enthusiasts, love the Mazda5. Based on the awesome Mazda3 chassis, which was so good that Volvo used it for their C30 Polestar time-attack monster. Add to this the possibility of rowing-your-own and keep both feet busy, that is just pretty sweet. But that's not all. As they say, business in the front, party in the back, because behind the pilot ther are 4 seats and two sliding doors!

However, few people remember that Mazda didn't invented the enthusiast minivan. Long before the Mazda5 was the 1982 Nissan Multi aka Nissan Stanza Wagon aka Datsun Prairie.
With a curb weight of only 2,250 lbs, a five speed manual transmission and a rev happy 1.8L motor, the Giugiaro-designed MPV was no doubt a driver's car. In the picture on the left, we can see Nissan Multi dive-bombing a Panther, that is impressive !

That was all fun and games, but things were about to get serious. The addition of a 4wd version transformed the nimble sport van into a family guy's rally monster of our dreams.

So that's for the business, now let's talk about the party side. The Multi had two sliding doors, on a hatch and 2 front doors. The seats could be flattened so that the whole car interior became a Queen-sized bed. Excellent for camping or impromptu swinger parties.
The Multi soldiered on until 1988 and was replaced by the Nissan Axxess, a vehicle very similar to the Mazda5
In conclusion, Mazda did not invent the concept, but it deserves credit to remind us that the Nissan Multi once existed.
Have a great week-end

My parents bought a Stanza wagon new in 1987, in beige with a stick. Replaced it in 1996 with a Mercury Villager...car was a tank, until it started eating alternators. Think it had between 140,000 and 150,000 miles when my Mom traded it in.
My cousins, a few years later, bought a Nissan Axxess. Lots of love for the small but practical tall wagons.

The Axxess was not around long in the USA. I tried and tried to find one when I first started a family.
Ended up in a Mitsubishi Expo. Sliding doors but ONLY on the passenger side. It ate transmissions tho.
